RUDDER --- BAT POLE FLOAT

This type of flat float has been called by many names, bat float, lollipop float, disc float, leaf float etc.. I like to refer to it as the Bat float, because of its bat like wings plus I like the name too,  its flat body can be held against a turbulent current very easily. The shape of the float allows, use of half the weight of a traditional bodied float.

This rudder shape float was first developed in the 1970 by fellow team member “Ted Parry” His version was a large 10 swan shot trotting type of all balsa floats used for trotting the fast waters on the lower River Wye. However the smaller pole version was later developed in the mid eighties when pole fishing became popular adopting methods learnt from the continental anglers when fishing abroad on international duties.

Used in deep or shallow fast swims, it can be held back at any pace, even held still. It is very sensitive to shy biting fish. Because of the shape it acts like a boat rudder, steers the turbulent flow, yet holds perfect still. I develo[ped this float many years ago after being given one by a Danish angler, the one he gave me was huge, probable too big for our home waters, yet I saw its potential and soon developed smaller ones for our British wateways

The shotting is best when a bulk down is introduced this helps to stabilize the float in the turbulent current. Keeping the bait down near the bottom. Just a few dropper shots are required three number sixes or two number 5.

The float has a feel to it when fishing a slower swim, the angle of the balsa rudder lends the float to trot a straight line, holding back hard on a fast running river the float will have a tendency to ride out of the water, so simply by putting on extra weight will over come this problem, so mostly the float is best used with a steady pressure from the pole tip and over shotting.

When striking and not connecting, the float can be released and it will fall back into the same line as to continue the trot down, the more the bait is in the water the more chance of catching a fish.

Laving on the bottom is always a good method to catch bigger fish and with this method float. Combined with casters it is a real killing method for big roach.
