POLE WAGG
The peacock wagg pole
float is a mini waggler used in conjunction with a pole, ideal for
sinking the line against a wind drift. The peacock quill is a very
versatile material, very buoyant and can be made or cut to size use in
conjunction with pole or whip.
Before the British angler could get hold of the modern day pole-floats, peacock was used as a good substitute, even today it has its place. The best performance I can remember was the World championships in northerly Ireland 1982, on the Newry canal. That year the great Kevin Ashurst, won the individual championship, using a homemade peacock top and bottom fixed float pole-float. The peacock waggler pole float is ideal for far bank canal fishing when the need to put the float under a far bank obstacle such as a bush or over hanging tree. Coming 12th on a National championship, on the Oxford canal, was one of my successes with this float. Using this float to drift under a far bank bush saw me catch nearly 61b of small chub, losing one that would have put me at least second in the division competition. The peacock wagg can be used either breaking down the pole or in some cases whip to hand, back shotting this little float is excellent for holding in a wind or a drift. This float is very versatile and can come as a flat top, or with a bristle top, it can also be used with a top and bottom attachment as well as bottom fixed only. (wagg type) Sizes of float depend on the situation; I have some as small as 1/2 inch long and some as big as 3 inches long. This float can be adapted for whip bleak fishing, and with a bottom only rig and splashing it on the water when casting, can attract the bleak straight to your bait, using this method on the river Wye has accounted for some big bags of bleak for me, 25lb and 29lb respectively. A brilliant float for carp fishing in the margins can be used in very shallow water, with a minimum of shot down. A float certainly worth carrying in your tackle box.
