THE AVON FLOAT

The Avon float has been written about many times and according to my research the great Billy Lane praised this superb float originating its name, he said from the Warwickshire Avon, this very successful float now, is probably used almost on every river in the country.

Modern day developments and appraisal come from Mervin Hawkins, of Bristol. Using his nickname that he inherited from his brother ''Topper'' his name is sonorously now with this float.

The Avon float is used with great affect on rivers like the Bristol Avon with a medium flow and a depth of between 8ft and 14ft The Avon float fishes it self with the weight bulked down and a few droppers, it is an instantly fishing float another words as soon as the float lands in the water the float sets and starts to fish instantly.

The Avon float is made up of a body on top of a crow quill set two thirds up the quill stem and can vary between balsa, cork and polystyrene.

Shapes have also changed with the times, the original torpedo shape still has its following. And these days the new high broad shoulder type is used with good affect, for reducing  the flow when holding back or an upstream wind. Because of the nature of the float it travels the swim very steady and at the same time, the sensitive crow quill detects the slightest bite indication.

Casting the Avon is also very easy, either a side cast, under arm or overhead, the bulk weight carries the float to your chosen destination. With your finger on the reel adjust to check it when entering the water.
Sizes of float vary, depending on the venue, from 4bb up to 12bb bulking the main shot about 20" from the hook and using either One or 2bb droppers, further the cast less dropper shots, as a rule of thumb. Making sure that you squeeze the bulk shots onto the line with the split facing the same way, this will help in less twist on the line, sometimes a small swivel can be introduced just below the bulk and some anglers use an Olivetti instead of a bulk but in my opinion a bulk shot is more pliable.

A vast range of running water venues lends this float adaptability, fasts shallow, deep, slow, turbulent, and because the float is attached by three rubbers a different size float can be changed to meet the conditions very quickly.
Making sure that you squeeze the bulk shots onto the line with the splits facing the same way, this will help in less twist on the line.
